The Viking Art of War

September 28, 2010

I’ve been a Viking-Age reenactor for many, many years. Bjornstad is a group of Viking-Age reenactors of which I am proud to be a member. Here’s their presentation on the Viking Art of War.

This is where it begins. The intent is to demonstrate that one can take a Conan story from the hands of Robert E. Howard, and with very minor adjustments, make it into a very entertaining film.

We’ve chosen the ideal Robert E. Howard/Conan tale that is the most suitable for our capabilities.

After a long period of trial and error!

We live in Northern California, and in the winter, our nearby Sierra Nevada range is well-cloaked in suitably barbaric snow. It’s got very rugged scenery, including Yosemite National Park and the legendary Donner Pass.

I may be able to recruit some Viking-Age reenactors, but at any rate, I have plenty of spare costumes for our actors.

Eddie Keen is well-versed in the arts of Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) for film.

This project is attracting some very interesting talent, particularly actors. This is not going to be a cheap, tawdry production. We’re going to make Bob Howard’s shade mighty proud.

Stay tuned Hyborians!

Edward Covolo accompanied me on a quest to capture Robert E. Howard’s beloved poem Cimmeria on video tape.
I remember
The dark woods, masking slopes of sombre hills;
The grey clouds’ leaden everlasting arch;
The dusky streams that flowed without a sound
And the lone winds that whispered down the passes.

We made this at Castle Rock State Park and Monte Bello Open Space Preserve. Enjoy!

There is a
movement afoot as even you read this. The old studio system of film making
is now threatened by hordes of passionate fans with inexpensive cameras and
web access.

The means of producing and distributing movies can no longer
be solely dominated by the big professional studios. Watch this space;
one senses that film history is about to be made.
